Title: Counselor in Training (CIT) or Junior Intern
Age-appropriate responsibilities:
• Help younger campers transition between activities
• Assist instructors on land and in shallow water
• Model camp rules and surf etiquette
• Help with setup, sunscreen reminders, water breaks
Counselor in Training (CIT) Program – What it’s all about 🌊
The Counselor in Training (CIT) program is a leadership opportunity for experienced campers who are interested in learning what it’s like to help run surf camp and work with younger campers.
Because you’ve been coming to camp for so many years, this is a chance to take the next step and be part of the camp team.
What you’ll do as a CIT?
As a CIT, you’ll:
• Help instructors and counselors during surf lessons
• Support younger campers with transitions, sunscreen, and water breaks
• Assist with beach setup and clean-up
• Learn about ocean safety, surf etiquette, and reading conditions
• Be a positive role model and help create a fun, safe camp environment
You’ll mostly be assisting and shadowing, not leading activities on your own.
What you won’t be expected to do
To keep everyone safe:
• You won’t teach lessons by yourself
• You won’t be responsible for campers alone
• You’ll always be working alongside an adult counselor or instructor
This is a learning role, not a job.
What you’ll learn
By the end of the program, you’ll gain:
• Leadership and teamwork skills
• Experience working with kids
• A deeper understanding of surf instruction and ocean safety
• Confidence communicating with campers and staff
• Insight into how a surf camp operates
Why this is a big deal
Not everyone is invited to be a CIT. It’s for campers who:
• Know the camp well
• Show responsibility and maturity
• Care about younger campers
• Love being part of the camp community
